The divine and joyous celebration of Maha Shakotsav resonated with vibrant colors and spiritual fervor at Vadtal Dham – Shri Swaminarayan Temple, Wheeling, on Sunday, February 5th. This auspicious occasion commemorates a remarkable event in the divine journey of Bhagwan Shri Swaminarayan when, in 1821 C.E., He personally prepared delicacies of eggplant (brinjal), khichdi, and rotla for the devoted villagers in Loya. To honor this significant event, the temple prepared the same dishes as mahaprasad, allowing devotees to partake in the blessed feast with deep reverence and gratitude.

The uniqueness of Maha Shakotsav lies in the extraordinary experience of the devotees when they tasted the shaak (vegetable dish) prepared by Maharaj. Although many other cooks had also prepared various meals, it was astonishing that the followers solely chose to consume the shaak prepared by their beloved Maharaj. Each morsel of the shaak seemed to carry a divine touch, as it not only fulfilled their physical hunger but also gratified their innermost desires and tastes. It is believed that the shaak miraculously transformed into the meal that each devotee had yearned for in their hearts, manifesting the divine presence and omniscience of Bhagwan Shri Swaminarayan.

The privilege of sponsoring this sacred event bestowed devotees with a unique opportunity to prepare a mixture of the shaak in the divine presence of Shri Ghanshyam Maharaj. The lovingly prepared offering was then presented as a symbol of devotion and surrender, symbolizing the devotees’ dedication to the divine will. The celebration reached its crescendo with a grand raas utsav, filling the air with the melodious beats of devotional music and the enchanting dance of devotion. As the mesmerizing Aarti was performed, the temple reverberated with divine energy, and the devotees immersed themselves in the blissful atmosphere of divine grace and blessings.

The day concluded with a heartwarming mahaprasad, where all the devotees shared the blessed meal together, fostering a sense of unity, love, and camaraderie among the spiritual family. The divine aroma and taste of the sacred food filled their hearts with divine satisfaction, reminding them of the profound connection they share with their beloved Maharaj. Maha Shakotsav stands as a testament to the eternal bond between the Lord and His devotees, manifesting His love, compassion, and divine presence in every aspect of their lives. As devotees in Chicago have been seeing programs of Shakotsav in India taking place in villages under Shri Laxminarayan Dev – Gadi and in the presence of P.P.D.D. 1008 Acharya Shri Ajendraprasadji Maharaj and P.P. 108 Bhavi Acharya Shri Nrigendraprasadji Maharaj, they were rejoiced to experience a similar feeling here at home.
