Uttarayan and Makar Sankranti, also known as the Festival of Kites, brought boundless joy and festive spirit to the devotees as they gathered at Vadtal Dham – Shri Swaminarayan Temple, Wheeling on Saturday, January 14th. The temple premises were adorned with vibrant kites soaring high in the sky, symbolizing the spirit of unity and celebration.

The celebration extended beyond the skies, as a mini annakut (a variety of sumptuous food offerings) was arranged to mark the auspicious occasion and to celebrate the end of Dhanurmas. Devotees gathered in the temple to offer their heartfelt prayers and seek the blessings of the Lord. The sacred Akhand Dhun, an unbroken chant of the divine names of the Lord, resonated through the temple for two hours, infusing the atmosphere with spiritual energy and serenity.

As part of the traditional rituals, special sesame laddu and khichdi were offered to the Lord, signifying prosperity and abundance. Makar Sankranti is a unique festival as it marks the transition of Suryanarayan (the Lord of the Planets) into the Capricorn zodiac from the Sagittarius zodiac towards the north. This celestial phenomenon holds immense significance in Indian culture, and devotees partake in the festivities with devotion and joy.

Apart from its astronomical significance, Makar Sankranti also holds agricultural importance in India. It is a time when farmers celebrate the bountiful harvest and express gratitude to nature for its blessings. The festival symbolizes the spirit of thanksgiving and appreciation for the gifts of the earth.

As a gesture of devotion and goodwill, devotees within the Swaminarayan faith celebrate ‘Joli Utsav’ by collecting special donations from other devotees. These contributions are utilized for various charitable and benevolent deeds, reflecting the spirit of selflessness and service ingrained in the teachings of Bhagwan Shri Swaminarayan. The importance of such “dhan seva” is expounded by core scriptures and explained by P.P.D.D. 1008 Acharya Shri Ajendraprasadji Maharaj (Shri Laxminarayan Dev – Vadtal Gadi) that we should follow Shikshapatri and donate 10% of our income to Bhagwan.

The festivities of Uttarayan and Makar Sankranti at Vadtal Dham were a vibrant and soul-stirring experience, bringing together communities in celebration, devotion, and charity. The day’s events left a lasting impression on the hearts of the devotees, fostering a deeper connection with their faith and instilling a sense of unity and purpose in their spiritual journey.
